By far the best way to boost your metabolic rate is to build muscles, because they will naturally boost metabolism i.e. the more muscles you have the more fat you will burn. this doesn't mean you have to look like a body builder, because even a few muscles in the right place (which will really help your shape) will do wonders.

That is why to boost metabolism you should focus on 2 key items :

1a. Helping your thyroid

Limit eating foods which contain chemicals that cause the enlargement of your thyroid gland.

The main foods to avoid are rapeseed, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, maize, lima beans and pearl millet. In addition if you have an underactive thyroid also limit your intake of fats, sugars, sodium chloride, red meat and eggs.

If these are your favourites than avoid eating any of them raw as cooking will help reduce the thyroid interfering chemicals.

On the other hand do eat 'thyroid helping foods' that contain iodine such as kelp, beetroot, radish, parsley, potatoes, fish, oatmeal and bananas.

1b. Protein

When you eat the right amount of protein for your body this will increases lean body mass. (i.e. helps your muscles work at their best).  The more lean body mass you have, the higher your metabolic rate and the more calories you'll burn.  

Getting the right level of protein will help boost your metabolic rate (naturally) and increase the speed at which you lose weight.

 

2. Exercise

The second item (as mentioned) earlier is exercise.

Yes building muscles are important to boost metabolism - and the gym is the best option.  (resistance training using the equipment is the easiest way to get some muscles and shape)

However other sports (like swimming, walking, etc.) also help with the treatment of hypothyroidism.

The reasons is that exercise increases tissue sensitivity to the thyroid hormone and stimulates thyroid gland secretion. This is especially true in people who are dieting; this is because when dieting the metabolic rate decreases but exercise prevents this decline. An exercise regime of between 15-20 minutes per day will be beneficial with hypothyroidism. This exercise needs to be strenuous enough to raise the heartbeat, which is why something like walking, swimming, running and cycling is ideal.
