The main foods to avoid are
cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach,
peanuts, pinenuts and linseeds.. If these are
your favourites than avoid eating any of
them raw as cooking will help reduce the thyroid interfering chemicals.
In
addition if you have hypothyroidism try to limit the amount of fats, sugars, sodium chloride, red meat and eggs
you eat.
There are also a variety of 'thyroid helping foods' which naturally contain iodine such as kelp, beetroot, radish, parsley, potatoes, fish,
oatmeal and bananas.
Carbohydrates / Hypothyroidism and Protein
To boost an under active thyroid avoid
eating carbohydrates on their own (for example a baked potato) and limit your caffeine intake.
Protein is very important and try to
make sure you up your protein
intake, the reason being that protein is digested slowly helping to slow down the release of
insulin.
Increase Fibre
Make sure you eat 30-40g of fibre per day
as many people with an under active thyroid suffer from constipation.
You must ensure when you increase your
fibre intake you do it slowly and you drink plenty of water. It is
hard to eat this much fibre you may benefit from a supplement.
