How to lose weight with hypothyroidism

step by step advice that works

Helping your Thyroid....

If you are having difficulties to lose weight then hypothyroidism could be one of the reasons.

Up to 3 % of the population could be suffering from hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) and it will affect the plan you use how to lose weight.

The very first stage is to ask your doctor for advice as you might need to take medication, very simply hypothyroidism means you have an iodine shortage in your body.  As it is quite common don't panic ! there is lots of advice and help available.

However if you want to lose weight with hypothyroidism then you will need to follow a specialised plan, as most 'common' weight loss plans simply won't work.

Do you have hypothyroidism ?

Only the doctor will be able to give you accurate advice, but the easily spotted symptoms include, tiredness, increased sensitivity to cold, constipation, depression, thin, brittle fingernails, decreased sweating, dry, itchy skin and putting on weight (or noticing weight loss plans don't get the same results)

However don't automatically assume the above symptoms mean you have hypothyroidism, there could be any number of other reasons.

In addition a number of women will have their thyroid affected within a year of giving birth - which is why getting the right advice so important.

How do you lose weight with hypothyroidism ?

The key is to use a simply step by step plan. There is absolutely no reason why you can't get great results, and you should be able to see a real difference within a month.

Firstly - make sure you are doing everything possible to help your thyroid.

If you have hypothyroidism you will have a slow metabolic rate making weight loss very difficult, which is why the starting point is to help your thyroid as much as possible. (more details below)

Secondly - you need to use the right weight loss plan.

Most diet plans simply won't work - they will cut back on calories to much leading to a slow down in metabolism.  (more details below)

Selecting what you eat...

To help your thyroid make sure you are eating food containing iodine, for example kelp, beetroot, radish, parsley, potatoes, fish, oatmeal and bananas. These will help your thyroid work at it's best

Similarly make sure you avoid those foods that will interfere with your thyroid, such as rapeseed, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, maize, lima beans and pearl millet. In addition if you have hypothyroidism also limit your intake of fats, sugars, sodium chloride, red meat and eggs.

Do note that a very common side effect of hypothyroidism is constipation hence fibre is very important.  The easiest way is to top up by adding fibre supplements.  (follow the links below)

Exercise

If you are looking to lose weight then exercise is always a good idea, as that will burn calories and increase your resting metabolic rate.

However in addition with hypothyroidism exercise also increases tissue sensitivity to the thyroid hormone and stimulates thyroid gland secretion. Try to have an exercise regime of between 15-20 minutes per day as that works especially well with hypothyroidism. (for example walking, swimming, running and cycling.)

Your weight loss plan

The good news is that there are many, many success stories for weight loss with a slow thyroid or metabolism.

However the main reason for their success was that they followed a weight loss plan specifically designed to boost metabolism.

If you have hypothyroidism most weight loss plans won't work for you, and you will need a specialised plan to get the best possible results.

The starting point is that you need to cut out at least 500 calories per day from your current diet to lose weight. However you need to make certain that you :

  1. Don't starve.
Even though you are reducing your calorie intake never go below 1,000 calories per day.  If you then this will signal to your body that you are in starvation mode, and will slow down your metabolism.

  2. Eat smaller meals more frequently.
Don't skip meals! Smaller, more frequent meals keeps your blood sugar stable and provides a steady source of energy to fuel metabolism.

  3. Make sure you eat breakfast.
If you don't eat breakfast, you slow down your metabolism and send the body into "hoard mode," thinking it's starving because you're going a long period of time frequently 8 to 10 hours or more, without food. Try a shake packed with nutrients, hunger busting soy protein and complex carbohydrates instead of skipping breakfast.

  4. Top up with vitamins, minerals and nutrients

Your body tends to look for all the essential 'building blocks' it needs to be healthy and survive.  By reducing your calorie intake there is a real danger of reducing all the essential vitamins and minerals you need. By "topping up" will you not only feel better, but you will also prevent hunger.
