1. Cut down on calories but ….

There is more to losing weight than cutting calories.

Especially with an underactive thyroid you will need to eat just the right amount of calories to lose weight.

Most plans work by reducing daily calories by at least 500 calories.

But if you have an underactive thyroid you need to be very careful how you reduce your calorie intake.

For example you should never go below 1000 calories per day (or skip meals) as your body will think you are starving and slow down your metabolism even more.

2. The right amount of Protein

Similarly with an underactive thyroid you need to focus on eating the right amount of protein for your body because this will help increase lean body mass. (i.e. helps your muscles work at their best).

The more lean body mass you have, the higher your metabolic rate and the more calories you’ll burn.

Getting the right level of protein will help boost your metabolic rate (naturally) and increase the speed at which you lose weight.

3. Exercise

Yes our most effective plan (details below) will help you lose weight without doing any exercise.

But we always recommend doing some sort of exercise with an underactive thyroid.

There are 2 reasons you need to take exercise:

  1. The obvious one that you will be burning calories
  2. But just as important exercise stimulates the thyroid function – which will also help your metabolism.

Try to do a little but often each week – for example walking is a great exercise and 20 to 30 minutes in total is all you need to do (for example 3 x 10 minute walks)

Don’t worry if you don’t feel that energetic at the moment – the right weight loss plan will naturally help you boost your energy levels

(so that you get into this win-win position where your diet gives you more energy, wanting you to do some sort of exercise, leading to more energy….).

How to select a plan

You need to be very careful in the type of weight loss plan you use. The choice of weight loss plans is enormous : cutting back on calories, avoiding food groups, protein based, having to go and be weighed, etc.

Bear in mind the most important fact….

- with a slow metabolism or thyroid you need to use a plan specifically designed for weight loss and boosting metabolism.

A successful plan contains four main elements:

A. – Diet Plan

The starting point is that you will have the same issues as anyone wanting to lose weight.

Which is why you need a diet plan that reduces calories without loss of energy, prevents hunger as well as providing essential vitamins and minerals.

B. – Low Glycemic Index Plan

In addition you need a plan which will provide long lasting energy.

That means containing the right foods which have the right calorie levels to lose weight, but the right ingredients to help you boost your energy levels.

C. – Vitamins, minerals and nutrients

Your body tends to look for all the essential ‘building blocks’ it needs to be healthy and survive. By reducing your calorie intake there is a real danger of reducing all the essential vitamins and minerals you need.

That is why a plan which provides enough essential nutrients will help you to not only feel better, but will also prevent hunger.

D. – Metabolism

But in particular you need to focus on your metabolism.

When the thyroid is underactive (hypothyroidism), it produces too little thyroxine, producing symptoms such as extreme tiredness, an intolerance to cold, mental drowsiness, weight gain (even with a poor appetite), constipation, etc
