3 Key thyroid diet items What to eat for fast results : 1. Eat Breakfast... Yes to lose weight (whether you have an underactive thyroid or for any other reason) you need to cut back on calories. For example in most cases that starting point is to reduce your daily calories intake by 500 calories. However you should never ever go below 1000 calories per day (or skip meals like breakfast) as your body will think you are starving and slow down your metabolism even more.
2. Protein and Fibre... Like most diet plans you need to cut back on carbohydrates but if you have an underactive thyroid then you need to especially focus on 2 key 'food groups' 2a - Up your protein intake. The reason is that protein is digested slowly helping to slow down the release of insulin. (in addition protein tends to 'fill you up' so preventing hunger between meals) 2b - Eat enough Fibre One of the side effects of an underactive thyroid can be constipation. That is why you need to eat 30 to 40 g of fibre each day. When you are increasing your fibre intake do it slowly (over time) and make certain you are drinking plenty of water.
3. Exercise Yes knowing what to eat is very important with an underactive thyroid but for fast results you also need to make sure you do enough exercise. There are 2 reasons for doing exercise. Firstly there is the obvious one that you will be burning calories, and exercise does tend to make you feel good !
However equally important is that exercise
stimulates the thyroid function - which will also help your metabolism. Try
to do a little but often each week - for example walking is a great exercise
and 20 to 30 minutes in total is all you need to do (for example 3 x 10
minute walks)
